If you don’t already know, Pidgin aka Gaim is a multi-protocol instant messaging client that works with pretty much all IM services and accounts. For starters it supports all the main flavors like: AIM, ICQ, IRC, MSN and Yahoo! Plus you can long in to all of your accounts at once!

**Hint** Now you can talk to people on AIM, MSN Messenger and Yahoo! Messenger without opening up three different clients! =]

  1. Download & Install the latest version of Pidgin.
  2. Open Pidgin and go to Add / Edit Account window of Pidgin.
  3. From the drop-down box choose XMPP as the Protocol.
  4. For the Screen name enter your Google Id (Gmail Id). eg. bunpamdp
  5. For Server enter gmail.com
  6. You can leave the Resource with the default ‘Home’.
  7. In the Password field enter your Google ID password.
  8. Enter Local alias as whatever you want to.

If you are getting the “Connect Error” when saving the account, try going to the advanced tab, check “Allow plaintext auth over unencrypted streams”, put 5222 as your connect port, and talk.google.com as your connect server. For proxy type, Use “use environmental settings”.
