Here’s a quick and simple hack to change the registered owner and organization name in Windows Vista.

  1. Click on the Windows Start Orb
  2. Type regedit.exe into the search box and hit Enter
  3. This will open up the Registry Editor, on the left hand pane navigate to:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindows NTCurrentVersion
  4. If you look in the right hand pane you will see RegisteredOrganization and RegisteredOwner
  5. Double click on either the owner or organization key to change the value
  6. If you want to see the changes, go back to the start menu search box and type in winver.exe

BTW, after writing this I have just realized that this could be used as a prank >=]

I’m sure most of you know that every version of Windows Vista except for Enterprise has a 30-day trial/evaluation period. This 30-day grace period is fully functional and does not require a license, serial key, or activation. However, if the trial ends and Vista has not been activated it will lock itself into Reduced Functionality Mode. Now of course there are still ways to use your now crippled O/S but for most people it will be too much of a hassle to put up with.

So whats the solution?

Simply rearm the activation grace period before the existing period ends.

You can even rearm the grace period up to 3 times! Which equates to around 120 days of full usability without activating!

I’m pretty sure a lot of you were worried when Microsoft announced in their licensing requirements that you would only be able to upgrade to Vista from within Windows XP. This means that you can’t do the old fresh install and verify by inserting the Windows XP disc anymore. You actually have to have a legitimate Windows XP installation on the computer your trying to upgrade. Again, some of you may be worried and others of you may not be worried. I for one however prefer to have a clean installation anytime an operating system is involved.

Now you may be wondering what exactly you can do to have a clean install. But thanks to M$ leaving behind a huge flaw there’s actually a pretty simple workaround.
